Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network criticises Italy for its arrest of Tunisian fishermen

Brussels, 04/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) is “deeply concerned by the plight of seven Tunisian fishermen arrested in Italy on August 8, 2007”. It says in a press release that the fishermen “came to the rescue of 44 migrants and asylum seekers in distress”. The Italian authorities have charged the fishermen with “abetting illegal immigration”, a charge which carries a sentence of up to 15 years' imprisonment. The EMHRN says that the...
