Brussels, 31/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - On 31 August, the European Commission adopted a decision on the proposed Danish national allocation plan (NAP) for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for the 2008-2012 trading period of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS). The Commission accepted the total number of emission allowances proposed by Demark equal to 24.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year, i.e. 2 million tonnes lower than Denmark's verified emissions of 2005. The Commission nonetheless considers that the percentage (19%) proposed by Copenhagen for companies' use of carbon credits as part of the emissions reduction plans implemented in third countries in application of the Kyoto protocol flexibility mechanisms is not in line with the rule whereby use of such mechanisms must be complementary to national emissions reduction actions. It therefore calls on Denmark to ensure that the use of such credits is not more than 17.01% of its annual allocation. The plan will be automatically approved by the Commission as soon as Denmark makes this change. (ol)
