31/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - In a statement commemorating the 27th anniversary of the creation of the trade union movement 'Solidarity' in Poland, Liberal Polish MEP Bronislaw Geremek and former Polish prime minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki called for rapid changes in the governance system in Poland, along with early elections. The '2007 Gdansk Declaration' of 31 August 2007 co-signed by the first post-Communist prime minister of Poland (and former leader of Solidarity) Lech Walesa, notes that the 31 August 1980 agreements between the democratic opposition movement and the Communist government were being commemorated at a time when the spirit of solidarity seems to be fading. The state that had been considered as a common good was being dealt with by leaders as if it were a treasure trove they had acquired. The freedom and independence which Solidarity had paved the way for are not being accompanied by the feeling of solidarity, the declaration explains, adding that it was necessary to reveal the truth about the events over recent months and new elections were needed. On 7 September 2007 the Polish parliament will be deciding whether to dissolve the parliament following the deep crisis experienced in Poland since July 2007 when the Polish prime minister, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, dismissed Andrzej Lepper, Poland's deputy prime minister and farm minister.
