Foreign Trade Association publishes 'REACH Compliance Guide' for importers and retailers

Brussels, 02/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - Finding it impossible for importers and retailers to find their way around the EU's REACH Regulation (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals), the Foreign Trade Association (FTA) has published a 'REACH Compliance Guide'.

REACH came into force two months ago, but confusion as to its application still reigns, explains the FTA. 'It is simply not acceptable that there are still so many questions unanswered as to how European commerce is supposed to implement REACH - arguably the most complex and ambitious piece of legislation ever coming from Brussels,' said FTA Secretary General Jan Eggert.

The FTA explains that importers and retailers 'are ready to start the implementation process, but first they must know how the European Commission intends to interpret the obligations falling upon them,' and for this reason the FTA has sent a letter to Director General Heinz Zourek of DG Enterprise and Industry at the Commission calling for more guidance. 'Should timely and comprehensive guidelines fail to appear, the FTA anticipates severe implementation problems.'

The FTA has decided to seize the bull by the horns to make its members ready for REACH by preparing a REACH Compliance Guide.
