Brussels, 20/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Association of Commercial Television in Europe (ACT) says that mobile television offers interesting development opportunities, and welcomes the European Commission's intention to encourage its development (see EUROPE 9471). “All private sector operators are seeking to diversify beyond conventional television, and mobile distribution clearly interests our member companies,” said Ross Biggam, Director General of ACT. The Commission was, however, focussing too much on technical standards and was underestimating some legal and commercial issues, such as the fact that EU copyright legislation and the entire content market is based on the territoriality of rights, ACT goes on.
Télédiffusion de France (TDF), an operator and audiovisual, mobile telephony and broadband service provider, also reacted. “I am convinced that the conditions are right for a new mass market. All our experiences in Europe and the launches, in Finland for example, in which we have been involved as an operator, show the potential of mobile television. We are in the process of creating the 'new GSM',” said Michel Combes, CE of TDF. (il)
