Brussels, 15/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, the EU high representative for the CFSP, is delighted that the Sudanese government gave its agreement, in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia on 12 June, to a hybrid African Union-United Nations peace-keeping operation in Darfur of some 17-19,000 men.
In a press release, Javier Solana 'welcomes the acceptance by the government of Sudan of the joint AU/UN proposal for a hybrid operation reached during the high-level tripartite consultations held in Addis Ababa on 11-12 June 2007 and calls for an expeditious and transparent implementation of the three-phase approach to peace-keeping in Darfur.'
'High Representative Solana trusts that this positive outcome will constitute a major factor for the improvement of the situation in Darfur. He also urges the parties to comply with the need for an immediate comprehensive ceasefire accompanied by an inclusive political process to enable a sustainable peace in Darfur.' (an)
