Lebanon calls on EU for humanitarian support

Brussels, 08/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - Lebanon has directly accused the “Fateh el Islam” organisation as being responsible for the attack, on Sunday 20 May, against the Lebanese army in Tripoli (north of the country). Thirty-two soldiers were “savagely murdered”, writes the Lebanese prime minister in a note forwarded to EU foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, the European Parliament and the European Commission. Lebanon calls on Europe and the international community to consider the gravity of the situation. The Lebanese, like the Palestinians, are “victims of the organisation's exaction and resentful indoctrination”. The objectives of the organisation “are in no way connected to Islam and Palestine”, Lebanon states. In its note, the Lebanese government underlines the fact that “this war is not a war between Lebanon and the Palestinians, but rather a war against the Lebanese and the Palestinians equally”. It goes on to point out that “the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian factions have clearly condemned Fateh el-Islam” and “from the outset undertook to (…) assist the Lebanese state”. In the immediate future, Lebanon seems concerned by the humanitarian situation in the Nahr el-bared camp and urges the EU and the international community to assume its responsibilities and to meet its commitments towards the Palestinian refugees in the camps.
