Luxembourg, 08/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - Meeting in Luxembourg, the EU's transport ministers adopted conclusions, on Friday 8 June, in which they back the idea of including air transport in the EU's carbon trading system. Based on these conclusions, the EU may decide to present a common position on the issue to the assembly meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Montreal in September. In the conclusions document, the Transport Council says it is prepared to include aviation in the EU emissions trading scheme, but this should be seen as an initial step towards the end target of extending the carbon trading system to all international aviation. The ministers add that they are prepared to work in a constructive way with the ICAO to introduce measures to cut air transport emissions while remaining open to solutions proposed by other parties.
