08/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - The services of the European Parliament budgetary committee have announced that a political decision has been reached to pay to Frontex the €13 million still not available. “The funds intended for the European agencies, that were still unpaid, were paid at the beginning of the week”, a Parliament spokesman told EUROPE. Immigration Commissioner Franco Frattini, had recently urged the EP to release these additional funds to allow the European border agency (Frontex) to operate fully. “I make a frank appeal - the EP continues to block and to hold in reserve €12.7 million which is absolutely indispensable now, not next week but now. You have to react immediately”, Mr Frattini told MEPs during the plenary session on Wednesday. The amount, which is to be in addition to the €34 million already granted to the Agency for the year 2007, should enable it to carry out its missions more effectively. (bc)
