Brussels, 05/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Netherlands and the Czech Republic both consider that the future new EU treaty should grant more powers to member state national parliaments, and that it should no longer be called the “Constitution” or “Constitutional Treaty”, stressed Mirek Topolanek, the Czech prime minister, after a meeting in The Hague on Monday with the prime minister of the Netherlands, Jan Peter Balkenende. Also, neither country wants to hear “European foreign minister” mentioned, or wants the Charter of Fundamental Rights to be an integral part of the treaty (as in the draft Constitutional Treaty), explained Mr Topolanek, quoted by the Czech press agency, CTK. Also according to CTK, the Czech prime minister announced he would be supporting the Polish request for revision of the double majority system (foreseen in the draft Constitutional Treaty) for qualified majority voting in the Council. Until now, no other member state has publicly backed Poland, which is suggesting a mechanism based on the square root of the number of inhabitants of member states. (hb)
