Brussels, 09/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - On 7 May, WTO Director General Pascal Lamy said that the recent document drawn up by the chairman of the agriculture negotiations committee Crawford Falconer (see EUROPE 9417, 9420 and 9422) would be followed by a series of similar draft texts by the chairpersons of the various negotiation committees (manufactured goods/NAMA, services, etc.) “which could form the basis of an agreement”. After Mr Falconer's communication, the reference document on arrangements for liberalising trade in manufactured goods (NAMA) is now the most keenly awaited document in Geneva. Opening discussions in the week-long NAMA negotiation committee meeting, the chairman, Canadian Don Stephenson, said on Tuesday, however, that his text, which was currently being drawn up, would be published, without a provisional version, only after the adoption of the definitive text on the agriculture offer. Highly critical of the lack of progress over the last six months in discussions on how to reduce customs duties for industrial goods, Mr Stephenson also called on WTO members to work towards a compromise on the arrangements for the NAMA offer in the coming 12 weeks, until the end of July.
