Adoption of conservation measures for highly migratory species

Brussels, 08/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 7 May, the EU Council of Ministers adopted, without debate, the regulation updating and simplifying the conservation measures for highly migratory species, like tuna, swordfish and marlin, adopted by specialist regional organisations, such as the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT), the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) and the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC). A considerable number of recommendations from these regional fisheries organisations have been transposed into Community law (1991 regulation, amended in 2004), although some adjustments are required (see EUROPE 9366 on the Parliamentary opinion and 9151 on the proposal). The regulation also takes account of the international dolphin protection programme operating in the waters of the Eastern Pacific. Thus, only Community vessels operating under the conditions set by this international agreement are allowed to encircle pods of dolphins using purse seine nets, when fishing for yellowfin tuna. (lc)
