08/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - The new “Europe for citizens” programme will be launched on Thursday 10 May at simultaneous events in Brussels (Belgium) and in Rhodes (Greece). Over 500 people are expected to take part in discussions on European integration and citizens' involvement in it. In Brussels, Culture and Education Commissioner Ján Figel' will speak along with the former president of the European Parliament Pat Cox, Philippe Herzog, president of Confrontations Europe, and Odile Quintin, director-general at DG Education and Culture of the European Commission. In Rhodes, the event organised by the Council of European Municipalities and Regions will concentrate particularly on one element of the new programme: town twinning. The conference will bring together hundreds of elected representatives (mayors, town councillors etc) from across Europe. (gc)
