THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/poland

03/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - Three years after their accession to the European Union, 86% of Poles say they are satisfied, according to a CBOS poll published in Warsaw on Wednesday. In June 2003, 77.45% of Poles voted for accession in the referendum on their country's joining the EU. Today, only 7% of Poles are unhappy with EU membership, compared with 22% three years ago. 64% of the population now believe that they have benefited from belonging to the EU, while, when the country joined, only 40% hoped accession would bring personal benefit. The main beneficiary of accession is the agricultural sector, said 75% of those interviewed. This view is shared by 73% of farmers themselves. Poles also believe that EU membership has helped the environment (61%), productivity (57%) and combating unemployment (56%). (hb)
