THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/congo

02/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has welcomed the acquittal of Marie-Thérèse Nlandu and nine others detained in the Democratic Republic of Congo, accused of having led an insurrectionist movement at a demonstration in November 2006. Commissioner Louis Michel was “pleased to learn of this welcome outcome to the trial”, and he said: “Justice has brought the investigation to its end, and an exemplary verdict was returned, removing all politicisation of the matter. The end of the trial clarifies a sensitive situation which, had it been allowed to continue, could have harmed the image of the Congolese institutions and justice system”. Ms Nlandu, who supported Jean-Pierre Bemba in the second round of the presidential elections, was accused of inciting insurrection at a demonstration, on 21 November 2006, which ended with the Supreme Court of Justice being set alight.
