30/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - In a statement published on Friday, the EU said it was “disappointed” that the elections held in Nigeria on 14 and 21 April did not represent any significant progress in relation to the 2003 elections. The recent elections were marred by numerous irregularities and by violent incidents resulting in a high toll of victims, the German presidency said, calling on the authorities to ensure that those responsible were brought to justice. The EU deplored the serious organisational problems, attempts to rig the voting and distortions of the results at polling stations after the count, but welcomed the role played in particular by civil society organisations.
