José Manuel Barroso hopes to organise informal mini-summit with a few heads of state and government in Portugal on 12 May

Brussels, 24/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - The president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, intends to organise an informal mini-summit in Sintra (Portugal) on 12 May to bring a number of EU heads of state and government together - including the German chancellor and the current president of the European Council, Angela Merkel, and the future French president, Nicolas Sarkozy or Ségolène Royal - to discuss a solution to the Union's institutional crisis. A Commission spokesperson confirmed Mr Barroso's initiative to EUROPE, but also stressed that the list of invitations to this “very informal” gathering had not yet been established. The meeting will be part of the informal talks that the Commission president has been carrying out for a long while on reform of the EU institutions, she explained. (hb)
