18/04/2007 (Agence Europe) -EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana has criticised the American project to build a wall along the border with Mexico in an attempt to fight illegal immigration. He also said that migrants should not be treated like criminals. On Tuesday during a press conference in Mexico, Solana stated: “I don't like walls separating one country from another. We (the European Union) do not believe that walls are a reasonable way to prevent migrants crossing a border. We prefer to treat them as people and not as criminals”. In October 2006, the US president, George W. Bush, authorised construction of a new 1,100 km fence along the border between the two countries, despite the opposition from Mexico. (hb)
