Climate change and sustainable energy on ASEM environment ministers' meeting agenda - 24-26 April

Brussels, 18/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - The fight against climate change will occupy a priority place in the third meeting of ASEM (Asia/Europe Meeting) environment ministers on 24-26 April in Copenhagen (Denmark). European and Asian ministers have chosen to focus their work on major international environmental challenges, as well as the common responses to them through strengthened cooperation on concrete projects.

According to the provisional programme, this joint meeting of environment ministers from developed and developing countries will be centred around four themes: climate change and sustainable energy; loss of biodiversity and deforestation in the context of climate change; climate change and sustainable energy use; the future of Europe/Asia cooperation in the environment.

International governance in environmental issues is also on the agenda and will be tackled during dinner on 25 April. This last working day will be concluded with a common political declaration that will set out the markers for future Europe/Asia cooperation for establishing appropriate measures for responding to challenges of climate change and sustainable energy. It will also be looking at problems such as deforestation and the loss of biodiversity. The declaration is also expected to identify concrete follow-up action.

The “Climate Technologies Day” on 26 April will focus on a demonstration by Danish industries and researchers into the most advanced kinds of technology for producing sustainable energy.

Denmark will host the UN Conference on Climate change at which an international agreement is expected to be concluded on a global system for fighting global warming after 2012 (EUROPE 9395). The country is delighted at being able to host this important ministerial meeting, aimed at obtaining a consensus between Europe and Asia on beginning international negotiations in December in Bali.
