Brussels, 18/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek has affirmed that he sees no need for the European Union to discuss the US project for setting up an anti-missile shield in Central Europe. Prague has already agreed to the US invitation to negotiate the setting up of a radar system on Czech soil. During a visit to Sweden on 17 April, Topolanek informed the press: “At present, there is no need to communicate this issue at a European Union level”. According to the Dow Jones agency, the Czech prime minister explained that no member country had so far discussed its bases and military installations in the European Union. Topolanek also announced that the question of the anti-missile shield would figure on the agenda of the meeting between the Czech president Vaclav Klaus in May in Russia, with Russia's president, Vladimir Putin. Moscow is fiercely opposed to the American project. (hb)
