EU concerned at situation in Ukraine

Brussels, 03/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the EU expressed concern about the current political crisis in Ukraine. On Monday, President Viktor Yukashenko announced the dissolution of parliament by decree, which the pro-Russian prime minister Viktor Yanukovich and his supporters are calling to be annulled. In a statement, the German presidency 'calls on those with political responsibility in Ukraine to settle their current differences on domestic policy in a manner which complies with the constitution and democratic rules. This requires moderation and a willingness to reach compromise from all involved. The presidency of the EU hopes that Ukraine's ability to act will not be undermined and that relations between the EU and Ukraine will not be adversely affected.' The European Commission has urged pro-Russian and pro-Western political forces in Ukraine to find a peaceful solution. A spokesperson welcomes the active and open debate on the situation in the media and among civil society, describing it as a sign of progress that showed that democracy was working in the Ukraine. The Commission feels this 'domestic affair' can be resolved without mediation from the EU. The events in Kiev have not yet had any impact on the talks surrounding a new EU-Ukraine Partnership Agreement that started on Monday, explained the spokesperson. The Commission's envoy in Kiev is due to attend a briefing on Tuesday organised by President Yukashenko's department. (hb)
