16/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Socialist group in the European Parliament has called for an official enquiry into the funding of a controversial brochure written by Polish MEP Maciej Giertych, (non attached member, League of Polish Families). The brochure, “Civilisations at War in Europe” is alleged to contain anti-Jewish comments and is claimed to have been published with the financial support of the EP, according to the 16 February edition of French daily Libération. “We were shocked to read this booklet, which contains statements which run counter to the values of the EU,” said French MEP Martine Roure. “It would be completely unacceptable for European public funds to have helped finance this booklet, which was published with the Parliament logo. Our group will demand the reimbursement of any European public money which might have been awarded,” said Martin Schulz, the leader of the Socialist group in the EP. (hb)
