Brussels, 09/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - CLECAT, the European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistic and Customs Services, is concerned about the proposal before US congress to introduce 100% screening on all containers destined for the US and in a press release issued on Thursday it therefore congratulates 'Commissioner Kovacs for having the initiative to speak clearly against a proposal which is just attempting to deliver a political message rather than identifying a workable strategy.' CLECAT explains: 'As it is unclear if 100% screening will bring any added value in terms of security and the technology to implement it is not as yet in existence, the introduction of this measure at present would simply lead to confusion and delays at ports… A balance needs to be found between the need to enhance security and trade facilitation. Any new security measures should bring tangible benefits and disrupt international trade as little as possible.' (aby)
