Brussels, 09/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - At a press conference on Thursday after addressing Dutch parliamentarians in The Hague, the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, said that the Dutch had signed the treaty and therefore had a responsibility and had to work to find a solution. Everyone has to make a move, including the Netherlands, said Barroso, adding that his message of the day was 'Please help us!' The agreement unveiled the day before by the outgoing Dutch prime minister, Jan Peter Balkenende, supports a new EU treaty but opposes a European constitution (see EUROPE 9361). Earlier on Thursday, at a meeting in Eindhoven attended by Jose Manuel Barroso, Balkenende explained how he saw things: 'It is clear that the rules of the European game need to be updated, and fairly soon…. The European Constitution is not the answer. The citizens' rejection of it in the French and Dutch referenda was crystal clear… The new treaty must really be different. We need solution, no more no less. The new text should simply change and supplement the current treaties where needed.' 'We can make good use of the work that has already been done. Even many people who said 'no' to the treaty agree that it included useful elements,' said Jan Peter Balkenende. (ab)
