THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/constitution

19/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - According to a poll in the Netherlands by TNS NIPO, 47% of the Dutch are positive about the idea of a European Constitution, but a clear majority (60%) would reject the current draft again if a new referendum were organised today on the same text (which 61.5% of the Dutch rejected in a referendum in June 2005). According to the same poll, 18% of the Dutch oppose the very idea of a European Constitution, with 33% saying they have no views. Spain adopted the draft European Constitution by referendum and is not prepared to challenge it but is prepared to improve it, said Spanish European Affairs Minister, Alberto Navarro, in Paris on Thursday. He said he was prepared to improve the treaty because any human action can be improved upon. He said he was prepared to have a better treaty but didn't want to start off negotiating on the basis of the balances and substance of the treaty. Austria, which has ratified the Constitutional Treaty, says it is backing the efforts of the German Presidency of the EU to revive the draft European Constitution. On Thursday, Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer said he was attached to the Constitutional Treaty and the sooner there were positive developments, the better. (hb)
