Javier Solana leaves for Middle East on Wednesday

Brussels, 16/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - At the end of his meeting on Wednesday 17 January with the German minister for defence, Franz Josef Jung, the EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), will leave Brussels to visit the Middle East. On Thursday Javier Solana is expected to visit President Mubarak, the Egyptian foreign affairs minister and the Secretary General of the Arab League in Cairo. On Friday he will be in the occupied territories to reaffirm the EU's support for President Mahmud Abbas, who, in principle, he will be meeting in Ramallah. After a stop-over in Jordan, Solana will complete his trip with a visit to Jerusalem on Sunday. Meetings are planned with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Affairs Minister Tzipi Livni. On his return to Brussels, the High Representative will on Monday provide a report back to foreign ministers from the EU27 with regard to what took place at his meetings. The meeting of the General Affairs/External Relations Council will be the first after adoption by the United Nations Security Council of the resolution on sanctions against Iran, and will therefore provide an opportunity for discussing implementation of these sanctions. Ministers will also discuss the situation in Somalia and the Sudan, as well as that in the Balkans, the day after the general elections on 21 January in Serbia. (oj)
