Georgi Pirinski writes to European Parliament president on subject of healthcare workers imprisoned in Tripoli

Brussels / Sofia, 10/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - According to a report on Bulgarian national radio, Georgi Pirinski, Speaker of the Bulgarian parliament, sent a letter on 9 January 2007 to the president of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell, in which he calls for his personal support so that the matter of the Bulgarian healthcare workers and Palestinian doctor sentenced to death in Libya may be included on the agenda of the first European Parliament session (see EUROPE 9340). Mr Pirinski trusts the EP will take a stance on the new situation created on 19 December 2006 when the death sentence was confirmed for the Bulgarian nurses and Palestinian doctor involved in this affair. “It would be useful to have the opinion of the European Parliament”, Georgi Pirinski considers, although Bulgarians have already welcomed the European Parliament's support for the protest movement. The EP may vote on a resolution on this theme either during its next plenary session in Strasbourg (15-18 January) or during its mini-session in Brussels (on 31 January), and it may also be evoked in a resolution being drafted for the next EuroMed Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA) to be held in Tunisia in March.
