Qualified majority reject Commission proposal against Austrian safeguard measures on GMOs

Brussels, 18/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - Invited to take a stance on the Commission's proposals aimed at compelling Austria to lifts its safeguard measures against two genetically engineered maizes - MON 810 by Monsanto, and t25 by Bayer -the Environment Council rejected by qualified majority the Commission's proposal on 18 December. Only four Member States (United Kingdom, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Sweden) voted against the Council's decision rejecting the two Commission proposals. (an)
