Brussels, 15/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - Concerned by the deterioration of the situation in Lebanon, the Heads of State and Government of the EU25 restate their support for the government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. In a statement, they unreservedly condemn the assassination of Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel and all attempts by internal or external forces to destabilise Lebanon. Syria must thus put an end to all interference in the internal affairs of Lebanon and play an active part in stabilising this country and the region, the declaration states, calling on Damascus to restore normal international relations, including with the EU. Syria must recognise the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and cooperate with it, the final text adds. Calling on all parties to abide by Resolution 1701, in particular on the arms embargo, they call on Israel to cease violating Lebanese airspace. On the financial level, the EU states it is willing to contribute to the reconstruction of the country and to make the International Conference in support to Lebanon, to be held in Paris on 25 January 2007, a success. Disarmament and the drawing of international boundaries must be dealt with speedily, and Shebaa farms placed under UN jurisdiction for some time. (ab)
