Brussels, 08/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - According to Reuters, quoting a draft version of the renewables road map, due to be adopted in January as part of an overall package of EU energy policy and climate change measures, the Commission is to propose setting binding targets for the use of renewable energy by 2020. Backing the European Parliament's call for a target of 20% of the EU's total energy consumption to be from renewable sources by 2020, the Commission feels it is crucial to set binding targets to develop alternative energy sources, such as solar and wind power. The EU has already set an indicative target of 12% by 2010, which it will, in all probability, not reach. It is unlikely that the renewable energy share of EU energy EU will exceed 10%, acknowledges the Commission draft document. The Commission does not set separate targets for electricity, heating or refrigeration, and adds that proposals for a binding minimum target on biofuels will be made in 2007. (eh)
