Conference of Presidents approves new Commissioners, but wants clarifications on Mr Orban's portfolio

Brussels, 28/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Conference of the Presidents of the European Parliament on Tuesday recommended that the European Parliament approve the appointment of Leonard Orban of Romania and Meglena Kuneva of Bulgaria as future European Commissioners, to be in charge of multilingualism and consumer protection respectively. The vote is planned for the plenary session of December. The respective Parliamentary committees, which heard both candidates on Monday (EUROPE 9315 and page 16 of this bulletin), have already given their favourable opinions. The Conference of the Presidents would, nonetheless, like José Manuel Barroso to provide clarifications in writing on the exact extent of Mr Orban's portfolio, particularly on his competence in "inter-cultural dialogue".
