75 million euros in fines against new Member States which have failed to get rid of abnormal sugar stocks

Brussels, 13/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 30 November, the European Commission decided to set at 75.5 million EUR the sum total of the fines to be paid by the five new Member States of the EU (Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Slovakia and Malta) which have failed to take the necessary measures to get rid of sugar stocks deemed to be "abnormal", before their accession in May 2004. As was the case in previous waves of enlargement, the new Member States undertook, before they joined the Union in May...
