Young Europeans face 'Schengen Wall'

Brussels, 10/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - Young European Federalists (YEF) have organised a series of events in European cities to protest against what they call the 'Schengen Wall'. On the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall (9 November 1989), around 50 young Europeans formed a human chain in front of the Juste Lipse Council building in Brussels. JEF Europe President Jan Seifert said: 'Youth across all of Europe are taking to the streets on the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall to demonstrate against the current visa procedure that is costly, time-consuming and clearly dividing Europe in two again… European leaders must do something about it.' In April 2006, EU interior ministers decided that the price of entry visas to the Schengen Area would rise form EUR 35 to EUR 60 as at 1 January 2007 because of the introduction of biometric passports (see EUR OPE 9181). Several demonstrations took place on Thursday in a dozen cities, from Skopje in Macedonia to Edinburgh in Scotland, via the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and Vilnius, Lithuania, where the greatest number of demonstrators turned out.
