Brussels, 06/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - CFSP High Representative, Javier Solana, stated last week in Madrid that around a thousand three hundred soldiers from the European “Eufor” force sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo to help oversee the presidential and local elections are expected to return within the given time frame. International diplomats and observers at the second round of elections on 29 October declared that they were satisfied overall with the way the elections were carried out. Eufor troops deployed to ensure security in the capital, Kinshasa, together with the blue helmets from MONUC, are, in principle, expected to be sent back home on 30 November. Some EU Member States consider that some of these troops should stay due to the risk of violence breaking out when the official results are announced on 19 November. (ol)
