Brussels, 23/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, Commissioner Viviane Reding met the editors-in-chief of several renowned European daily newspapers (“La Libre Belgique”, “Helmsingin Sanomat”, “Ouest France”, “Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung”, “La Stampa”, “Luxemburger Wort”, “Polityka”, “Diario de Noticias “, “Expresso” and “The Times”), in order to discuss the future of the printed press, which is faced with new challenges (the rise of new media, free publications, lack of interest among younger people). Several subjects were on the agenda, particularly revenue from advertising, rules to limit the editorial content of advertising messages, product placement, and copyright. On this occasion, Ms Reding reassured the editors that there was no danger that advertising, a major source of revenue for newspapers, would ever be banned. This is the second high-level meeting between the European Commission and the press; the previous meeting took place in September 2005. (il)
