Brussels, 23/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - MEPs recently adopted under simplified procedure three reports approving proposals for a decision that would conclude agreements with a view to Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey's participation in the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA). On 12 October in Strasbourg, the plenary assembly approved the conclusion of these agreements that establish the conditions for the above three countries' participation in the activities of the Observatory, albeit without voting rights on the EMCDDA board. The reports recommend that the three countries should be linked to the European Information Network on Drugs and Drug Addiction (REITOX) and that they should share data with the Observatory in respect of legal requirements when it comes to data protection. Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey will each make a financial contribution to the Observatory in order to cover the costs of their participation. The agreements will be concluded for an unlimited length of time until Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey become members of the EU. Created in 1997, the EMCDDA aims to organise European-wide collection and analysis of data on drug consumption and on the evolution of consumption. (bc)
