25/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Armenian Federation has criticised the Socialist and ALDE groups of the European Parliament for apparently having bowed to pressure from Turkey, with the presentation, ahead of the vote on the Eurlings report on Turkey's progress towards accession to the EU, which is planned for Wednesday's plenary session, amendments (which, she pointed out, do not have unanimous support within both groups) calling for Turkey's acknowledgement of the Armenian genocide, as a condition for its accession to the European Union, to be dropped. These groups had been the main promoters of the passage in question at the committee vote on 4 September, Federation President Hilda Tchoboian noted (see EUROPE 9258 and 9269 on the position of the Greens). Several members of the European Parliament have been "threatened personally", Ms Tchoboian complained.
