Brussels, 20/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - CFSP High Representative Javier Solana and European Commissioner Louis Michel have condemned the attack perpetrated on 18 September in Baidoa, at the HQ of the provisional and federal institutions in Somalia, against president Abdullah Yusuf and the Somali parliament. This attack, affirmed the European Commissioner for Development, “aimed to go further than the provisional and federal institutions in Somalia and sabotage the peace process” (EUROPE 9267 on the conclusions of the Council of the EU on the subject of the inter-Somali dialogue).
A press release affirmed that the Commission also condemned “the deliberate and heinous assassination of an Italian humanitarian worker, Sister Leonella” on 17 September in Mogadishu and called on the Somali authorities to guarantee the safety of humanitarian workers “who have only one goal, to work for the service of the suffering civilian population”.
