15/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - The EU Council adopted conclusions on Friday with a view to the second session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) (created in March this year to replace the Human Rights Commission) from 18 September to 8 October in Geneva. The EU expects the HRC to become an “efficient and effective body that will make a genuine contribution to the protection and promotion of human rights around the world”, and states its resolve to ensure there is real “dialogue and genuine cooperation with others in order to achieve this objective”. In Geneva, emphasis was placed on examining reports established by “special procedures” and the EU states that, on an operational level, it will ensure adequate follow-up of the recommendations made in these reports. Ministers stress that the EU attaches great importance to the special procedures system and especially to the thematic and country mandates”.
