Solana notes progress but Council remains cautious

Brussels, 15/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, Javier Solana briefed the EU Council on the results of his meetings with the Iran's Chief Negotiator, Ari Larijani. The Council, however, did not adopt any conclusions. “Honestly we are making progress but it doesn't mean that everything is OK”, Solana told the press. “Since Sunday, our respective assistants, Robert Cooper and Javad Vaidi, have seen each other every day and I trust that I shall be able to meet Ari Larijani in coming days, but I couldn't say exactly when”, he added. The High Representative said, moreover, that the Americans “are not losing patience as we are in the same boat and because I represent all the members of the UN Security Council”.The option of sanctions remains open but not yet activated which we continue to dialogue,” Mr Solana added, stressing the importance of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York next week. Finally Mr Solana said, “We won't start negotiations with enrichment taking place simultaneously”. “We gave full support to him in his efforts to find a breakthrough,” said the President of the Council Erkki Tumioja. He went on, “We still have the hope that the UN conditions can be met. The work on the UN resolution goes on but we hope that a diplomatic solution can be reached”.
