Brussels, 15/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, less than a week after the 9th EU-China Summit, at which the two parties were unable to resolve their differences over bilateral trade conflicts, the Commission called for World Trade Organisation arbitration, asking for a panel to be set up to come to a decision in the auto parts case, which opposes the EU and China (see EUROPE 9165 and 9212). After the 133 Committee, on which the Council trade experts sit, gave its approval for such a move, the Commission asked the WTO to put the matter on the agenda for the meeting of the Dispute Settlement Body on 28 September. Faced with the same problem, the United States and Canada have made the same request to the WTO, the multilateral organisation which regulates worlds trade. “We have tried again and again to find an acceptable negotiated solution to this issue and without Chinese engagement we have no alternative but to take this course of action,” said trade commissioner Peter Mandelson.
