The French ALCATEL company has bought up the third generation UMTS European standard mobile telephone networks for $320. This activity, according to analysts is losing around $200 million out of a turnover of between $500-600 million. The deal only includes the radio part (transmitters) as well as the patents and customer base. Staff in this branch is around 1500. NORTEL will keep the second generation (GSM), the heart of the UMTS network and the work in the fourth generation (4G).
