Brussels, 31/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), in partnership with the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) is organising a conference in Lisbon on 12-13 October on the contribution of local and regional government to the eradication of poverty. The conference, entitled Eight ways to change the world, will focus on the contribution of European local and regional governments towards the achievement of the UN's Millennium Development Goals. Among those taking part will be the President of Portugal Anibal Cavaco Silva, his predecessor Jorge Sampaio, the Prime Minister José Socrates and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and former head of the Portuguese government Antonio Guterres.
