Brussels, 31/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - Member States should include at least two foreign languages from an early age in their school curricula, says the own initiative report from British Conservative MEP Christopher Beazley adopted on Monday by the Culture and Education Committee of the European Parliament. The aim is to make young children, particularly young British children who are often less motivated, aware of the importance of learning other European languages. According to the report, all education systems in the EU should ensure that, by the end of secondary education, their pupils have the knowledge and competences needed to prepare them for their role as future European citizens: there would, then, have to be courses on how the European Union and its institutions work, and to develop linguistic skills, in particular learning the languages of neighbouring peoples. In addition, it is suggested that training courses should provide teachers with the necessary understanding of European issues to enable them to introduce a European dimension into their teaching.
