EU cooperating on participation at Finul

Brussels, 23/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - Ten days after the entry into force of the truce between Israel and the Shia militia Hezbollah, the EU is still attempting to clarify its contribution to the UN temporary force in the Lebanon (Finul). On Wednesday in Brussels the political directors of the Member States' foreign affairs ministries met behind closed doors at a Political and Security Committee level (Cops) of the European Union to examine their participation in Finul. The total number of troops in this force is expected to be 15,000 soldiers at a maximum, as opposed to the current 2,000, according to the terms of Resolution 1701 of the UN Security Council, which put an end to a month of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. This meeting preceded the extraordinary meeting of the EU foreign affairs ministers on Friday in Brussels, with the participation of UN Secretary General Kofi Anna (see other article). The UN is hoping that Finul will receive a reenrolment of around 3,500 men around 28 August. EUROPE will return to the Cops meeting which is still continuing as we go to press.
