Brussels, 22/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - After the announcement made on Sunday of a second round of the presidential elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo on 29 October, serious disturbances occurred involving supporters of president Kabila (who obtained almost 45% of the first round vote) and his main adversary Pierre Bemba (who obtained around 20%), which resulted in several deaths in Kinshasa. Following Monuc's request, the UN's mission, the European EUFOR force took part in a joint intervention providing assistance to diplomats from the International Committee supporting the transition in the DRC. The committee is made up of permanent members from the Security Council who were at Pierre Bemba's residence, when it was attacked by Joseph Kabila's presidential guard. (See EUROPE 9243 and 9245).
