Brussels, 28/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - Minister-President of Bavaria Edmund Stoiber (President of the CSU and member of Angela Merkel's grand coalition) is opposed to Germany's taking part in any future multinational force in the Lebanon which has not been formally approved by the Knesset, Israel's parliament. Before considering deploying German troops in a multinational force, there would have to be not only a UN Security Council resolution and a lasting ceasefire, but also a “formal decision” by the Knesset expressing Israel's “explicit desire” for Germany to take part in this operation, Mr Stoiber told journalists in Brussels on Thursday. “For historical reasons, German troops cannot find themselves in a war situation between Israel and Hezbollah militias,” he said, pointing out that there was still no common position within the governing coalition in Berlin. “Personally, I am very sceptical” of the idea of German involvement, he concluded. On Thursday, Mr Stoiber had a meeting with the commander of NATO forces in Europe, General James Jones.
