Brussels, 28/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Commission is due to adopt by written procedure a proposal for anti-dumping measures on imports of South Korean fridges. Following an anti-dumping investigation by DG Trade, Commissioner Peter Mandelson has decided to limit the scope of the measures to two-door “side-by-side” fridges and not to recommend measures against “three door side-by-side” fridges, as requested by the American Whirlpool company. The company, which is established in Europe, but manufactures “three door side-by-side” fridges only in the United States, is trying to obtain “commercial favours”, according to the Commission, to compete with its South Korean rivals. “Since no three door side-by-side fridges are manufactured in Europe, we consider that European industry will not suffer any damage. After investigation, we have, then, limited the scope of the measures to side-by-side fridges,” Mr Mandelson's spokesman Peter Power told EUROPE. The Commission proposal to impose 12.2% anti-dumping duties on imports of South Korean side-by-side fridges will be put to the Council for approval before the end of August. In addition, the Commission completely rejects Whirlpool's allegations, which appeared in the Financial Times, that Mr Mandelson succumbed to “devious lobbying activity” on the part of South Korean manufacturers added Mr Power.
