28/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - On behalf of the EU, the President of the Council of the EU, Finland's foreign minister Erkki Tuomioja, has rejected Israel's interpretation of the outcome of the international summit on Lebanon in Rome on Wednesday. Tuomioja said the idea that the Rome statement calling for urgent work to reach a ceasefire (without explicitly calling for a withdrawal of Israeli troops, see EUROPE 9240) could be interpreted as giving Israel the go-ahead to continue its military operations in Lebanon was totally false. Israel's justice minister, Haim Ramon, said that the failure to call for an immediate ceasefire gave Israel the 'permission' to continue bombing until all Hezbollah militias had been forced out of southern Lebanon.
