Brussels, 18/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - Expressing its “deep disappointment that Iran has not responded positively” to the offer put to it by the “Six” (China, United States, France, United Kingdom, Russia and Germany) on 6 June, an offer which contained incentives, such as a technological aid which would allow Tehran to “develop a modern civil nuclear programme”, the External Relations Council, meeting in Brussels on Monday, recalled the decision by the “Six” to return to the Security Council “to make the decisions of the IAEA Board of Governors mandatory on Iran”. “Should Iran not comply, we will work for the adoption of measures under Article 41 of Chapter VII of the UN Charter” which provides for economic and diplomatic sanctions against Tehran, stressed the Council conclusions, before adding, “We remain committed to a diplomatic solution, … Should Iran decide to suspend all its enrichment-related activities and to implement the Additional Protocol, the way to negotiation would be reopened and action in the Security Council could be suspended”. Finally, the Council reiterated its commitment to “building a long-term relationship with Iran based on confidence and cooperation”, the development of which would depend on progress on all issues of concern, which include terrorism and the Middle East peace process.
